Route Collection

There are a number of existing routes in the Poway/Rancho Bernardo Area that previous Scouts have developed. Residents place their Recyclables on the curb for the Scouts assigned to that route to pick-up and bring to the collection site - the parking lot across the street from Painted Rock Elementary School. Scouts who have routes have the responsibility of finding a replacement to pick up their route if they are unable to fulfill their assignment.

Bin Duty

The Paper Company delivers large bins to house the newspapers. Scouts assigned to Bin Duty are responsible for unloading the papers from the vehicles and stacking them neatly into the bins. They are responsible for keeping the area free of debris. A Scout earns money towards his Troop 680 Account working Bin Duty in two ways:

  1. A dollar amount is given per bag. A number of bags is allocated for the number of hours the Scout works the Bin Duty.
  2. Bags of newspapers the Scout brings on his own to the collection site are given a dollar amount per bag. That amount is credited directly into the Scout’s Troop 680 account.

Recycling

Scouts assigned to Bin Duty are responsible for separating the recyclables into three categories:

1. Aluminum Cans

2. Plastic Containers

3. Colored & Clear Glass

Because the monies earned from plastic and glass are considerably less than the monies earned from newspapers and aluminum cans, all funds received for the plastic and glass go into the Troop 680 account. We do however encourage Scouts to bring in these items.

At the end of the day, these recyclables are taken to a recycle center and redeemed for cash and deposited into the troop account.

Again, the Scouts are responsible for keeping their area free of debris.

Sweeps

Closer to the end of the day, designated Parents “sweep” the routes to make certain that all items have been collected and to collect those items that may have been placed curbside later in the day (after the scout has collected in the area). They will drive through several routes and any items found will then be brought back to the bins.

Bin Supervisors

Bin Supervisors are the Parent/Adult volunteers. In accordance with BSA rules, there must be a minimum of two adults present at all times. Bin Supervisors are assigned a two hour period and are responsible for supervising the Scouts in unloading the vehicles and sorting the recyclables. If a parent is assigned a particular date and time for bin supervision, and they are unable to fulfill this obligation, it is the parents’ responsibility to find a replacement. You must also notify the Newspaper Collection Committee Chairman of the change/substitution - see below.
