RESCUE FACTS People are typically their own worst enemies in the
backcountry. A survey of 700 accidents in Wyoming's Grand Tetons found that 699 of
them were directly attributable to "pilot error". You simply must know when to turn back. Pressing on in the face of deteriorating
conditions simply shaves your margin of safety dangerously thin. Keep your party fed and fueled. Hungry, thirsty people soon turn cranky on
long outings. If someone feels
listless, grumpy, or worn out, sit down, munch an energy bar, and drink a
half-liter of water. A warming-up, drying-out, lunch break in the middle of a
hard, rainy day might seem like a distraction, but it'll pay big dividends on
