Chihuahua Valley Article one
A small group of unwilling and unknowing soldiers reach base camp at Indian Flats Campground believing they have won the battle against Mother Nature. This rugged group has hiked five miles today and hardly seen a single cloud. So, feeling safe, they set up camp and went to sleep. Then, the soldiers awoke to a harsh attack, rain. Not just rain, but icy rain, and plenty of it. Mother Nature soon elevated her attack to a light snow. Then, after a few minutes, the attack ended abruptly. Many thought the war we had waged was over, but, in truth, it had only begun. After joining up with our reinforcements (the dayhikers) the troop proceeded on their march. Three miles (and two injuries) later, we were ambushed!! First, only rain, then snow, sleet and hail! Finally, 12 miles, 2 injuries, 2 days and many types of weather later, we staggered to the cars. Then we were honorably sent home from duty.
Article Two
It was a gray and blustery morning when the overnight contingent met with the hiking group. When the hiking group arrived, it was ten or so minutes before the group that stayed overnight at Indian Flats campground arrived. They looked groggy and tired, but prepared for a ten-mile hike in Chihuahua Valley.
Unusual gunshots were heard throughout the hike as cartridges and shells could be found from miscellaneous weapons. Every now and then a few drops of rain could be felt and snow could be seen. The hike was wet and cold but adaptable if you were prepared. It seemed very high up even as we descended into the small parking lot near Indian Flats. The walk seemed endless as we made our approach to the cars. It was mid afternoon when we arrived at our destination. Everyone was tired, wet and would definitely like a good night’s rest at home. |
